The history of Townsville computer stores and centres

As a long-term Townsville resident, I have watched a number of computer stores come and go. Some were small workshops known mainly by word of mouth; others had large showrooms, regular newspaper advertisements and shelves full of parts. Together they helped families and businesses through the years when buying, upgrading or repairing a computer almost always meant speaking to someone local.

The golden age of the local computer shop

Before fast online ordering became routine, a good computer store was part retailer, part repair bench and part advice desk. You could compare cases and components, order a custom-built PC and return to the same people when something went wrong. The value was not just the stock on the shelf—it was knowing who understood the product after the sale.

P3C in Kirwan

One of the memorable names from the early 2000s was P3C, operated by Paul Compton. The Australian Business Register records P3C from June 2001, placing it firmly in that early local-computing era. Based in Kirwan, the business became known for computer sales and technical support. Paul later worked with Daniel Kendall at DakTech, another link in Townsville’s close-knit technology community.

Townsville Computer Centre and TSVC.com.au

Townsville Computer Centre was another prominent local name. Its old TSVC website promoted custom computers, brand-name parts, after-sales service and a showroom of more than 180 square metres. Many residents will also remember its large advertisements in local newspapers. The business operated from Alfred Street and, in an earlier period, from the Kingvale shopping precinct. Its message was straightforward: keep useful stock locally, give accurate advice and stand behind what was sold.

That formula mattered. In a regional city, a dead-on-arrival part or a failed work computer could not always wait for another freight trip from Brisbane. A stocked showroom and an experienced technician gave customers something an interstate checkout page could not: an answer that day and a person accountable for it.

Digital Matrix Computers

Digital Matrix became one of the best-known names of the next era. ABN Lookup records Digital Matrix Computers Pty Ltd from 24 July 2006. Founded by Lawrie Pastor, the business grew into a well-established destination for systems, components and repairs. The Digital Matrix business name later passed to Mosely Group, associated with Tom Mosely, in October 2024.

Townsville Computer Man used Digital Matrix as a supplier for customers during our own years of trading. We knew the value of having that range and knowledge available locally, so the fire that occured at their complex, close to the Warrina Shopping Complex on 9 February 2026 was deeply disheartening. ABC News reported that three shops were engulfed; police were investigating the cause and whether other incidents that night were connected.

Digital Matrix later announced that it could not reopen after the long insurance process and the personal and financial toll that followed. Tom’s farewell thanked the team and the community while describing just how hard the loss had been. The local market today

Townsville still has capable repairers, phone-and-device retailers, national chain stores and business-focused IT providers. Datacom continues to serve the organisational market, while local supplier Dash Pacific now advertises both retail sales and wholesale accounts from Mundingburra. The shape of the industry has changed, but the need for local knowledge and immediately available equipment has not.

Townsville Computer Man began in 2008–09 as that change was gathering pace. Our model is service-led: diagnosis, repair, upgrades and free collection and return across greater Townsville, with some commonly needed stock rather than a warehouse-sized retail range. It is a different model from the great local showrooms, but it rests on the same principle—local customers should be able to deal with a real person who knows their machine and stands behind the work.

The businesses remembered here are not a complete directory, and Townsville residents will each recall different shops, technicians and stories. That is part of the point. Local computer stores became landmarks because people relied on them. Their history is worth recording, and their best qualities—useful stock, honest advice and dependable after-sales service—are still the standard our region should expect.
